Where to Find Training for Your Career Plans

Students and instructor in electrical training.There are many resources for graduates who are planning to pursue certifications, training, or apprenticeships for skilled trades positions. The following resources provide classroom experiences, work-based learning experiences, and/or career training during or after high school.

Community College Certifications

Mott Community College’s Certificate of Achievement programs are designed for students seeking job entry skills and those who wish to improve their performance in their present jobs or who wish to qualify for advancement. Certificates of Achievement represent the equivalent of at least one year of college study (31 or more credits) but are shorter than Associate Degree programs and do not include extensive general education requirements.  

GST Michigan Works! Flint Service Center

The GST Michigan Works! Flint Service Center provides workforce development programs designed to assist job seekers to prepare for, find, and retain employment. GST Michigan Works! offers a variety of employment services, career counselors, employment specialists, and many education, training, and development resources.

Michigan Career and Technical Institute

Meeting the demands of today’s industry and workforce, the Michigan Career and Technical Institute provides individualized career development, education, training, and support services for individuals with disabilities preparing for and engaging in competitive integrated employment.

Skilled Trades and Apprenticeships

GST Michigan Works! helps job seekers find work, get training, and receive career advice. It also helps employers find skilled workers. Serving central and southeastern Michigan, it connects people with resources like job search support, skills training, and apprenticeships

The Pure Michigan Talent Connect website provides information, resources, and connections to career training opportunities in the Skilled Trades. These opportunities exist in traditional fields, like construction and advanced manufacturing, as well as industries like automotive, energy, healthcare, and information technology. The Pure Michigan Talent Connect website area for students, parents, and educators also provides opportunities to explore careers, apprenticeships, and training programs for middle school, high school, and college students.

Registered Apprenticeship provides paid, relevant work experience, related classroom instruction, and national credentials employers value. Find information about Registered Apprenticeships on the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity website.

Curbco, Inc. has four nationally recognized, registered apprenticeship programs approved by the U.S. Department of Labor. Those programs include Mechanic, Construction Driver, Construction Craft Laborer and Landscape Management Technician. These programs are paid on-the-job training that includes both hands-on experience and classroom curriculum.

The Operating Engineers 324 Training and Education Center in Howell, Michigan, provides hands-on training and certification for those pursuing careers in heavy equipment operation, construction, and maintenance.  

The United States Military

The United States Military is made up of six branches, each with their own active-duty and part-time components. Each varies in service commitment, location, and how its members contribute to the overall mission of protecting our country, though all components are on the same rank-based pay scale. There are opportunities to grow a career in military service and earn knowledge, skills, and experience toward a career outside the military.

Adult Education for those Obtaining a High School Diploma or GED

Throughout Michigan, adult learners can take courses designed to improve personal skills and achieve academic goals. Residents of the East Michigan Adult Education Region 6 counties seeking to continue their education can choose from several options offered throughout the region, including programs and services in local schools, community colleges, and other community organizations.
